infy EATS REVIEW: 15
Making Gridskipper’s list for best eats in Echo Park, I was doubtful about this upstart across the street from Pioneer Chicken. Varying opinions around the web make it out as either the beginning or end of the neighborhood, depending on your tax bracket. 7:45 on a Saturday night the place was deserted. 2 other parties were eating as we got in. The bar is closed, awaiting a license.
My fellow diners and I decided to join our jewish friend in breaking the Yom Kippur fast with the kobe burgers. The complimentary plate of olive crostini was a nice surprise. It came out with our water and was presented with all the flourish one could stand by our attentive waiter. We opted for a calamari appetizer which was by the numbers: fried, seasoned appropriately, served with nondescript dipping sauce. The burgers took 5 minutes longer than expected, and were worth it. I was impressed with the beef. We all ordered medium and were treated to meat with a nice pink center.
The service was great, the food was more than decent…I really wanted to hate this place, considering it’s location next to House O’ Spirits and The Gold Room. If you’re into this sort of thing, you’ll enjoy yourself. If you aren’t the type to spend $10 on a burger and fries, head to Patra burger or Happy Tom’s.
